Star Frontliner Dominie Joy

Meet Star Frontliner Nurse Dominie Joy! Dominie is a Certified Diabetes Care and Education Specialist formerly Certified Diabetes Educator who currently resides in Guam, USA. We were very lucky to have been given the opportunity to interview her and be able to share to the world her inspiring thoughts about the pandemic and life in general.

1. What inspired you to be a nurse?   I want to give back to the people who took care of me growing up specially my mother. I want her to feel that I value the hardship she went through in order to provide us a decent life. She was a single mother with three children and she made sure that we all finished schooling from kinder to college without any hardship.

2. What has been your most interesting or challenging or memorable experience during the pandemic that you’d like to share the world?  Face to face appointment was very temporarily stopped. So I did not see patients for several months. It felt like I lost my worth as an educator to help my patients.

3. How did you overcome the challenges and what have you learned out of it? We did Telehealth. It was foreign to most patients since they were  used to actual contact with a provider. I noticed few were not initially accepting it. But it helped  provide uninterrupted service to our patients.

4. Any words of wisdom  or inspiring messages you’d like to share related to pandemic or life in general? The pandemic devastated  every aspect of life: health, emotion, social life, finances and many others. It made me realize how powerful and strong humans are in order to adapt and survive. It also reminded me that life is short and better make the best out of it!
